Dual Fertilization, Intragenomic Conflict, Genome Downsizing, and Angiosperm Dominance

چکیده
New work suggests ‘subgenome dominance' in polyploids may only occur angiosperms. Subgenome dominance could explain angiosperm-specific genome reduction, with potential implications for angiosperms' global dominance. I suggest that evolution of the endosperm have selected subgenome dominance, due to increased hybrid/polyploid incompatibilities and/or through direct reciprocal suppression maternally- and paternally-inherited genomes.

Intragenomic conflict and cancer.
Intragenomic conflict occurs when some elements within the genome produce effects that enhance their own probability of replication or transmission at the expense of other elements within the same genome. Here it is proposed that mutations involved in intragenomic conflict are particularly likely to be co-opted by evolving lineages of cancer cells, and hence should be associated with the occurr...
متن کاملInterbirth intervals: Intrafamilial, intragenomic and intrasomatic conflict
Background and objectives: Interbirth intervals (IBIs) mediate a trade-off between child number and child survival. Life history theory predicts that the evolutionarily optimal IBI differs for different individuals whose fitness is affected by how closely a mother spaces her children. The objective of the article is to clarify these conflicts and explore their implications for public health. Me...
متن کاملEcology drives intragenomic conflict over menopause
Menopause is the transition from reproductive to non-reproductive life well before natural death. Rather than involving a smooth, rapid change, it is normally preceded by a long period of erratic hormonal fluctuation that is accompanied by a plethora of unpleasant symptoms. Here, we (1) suggest that this turbulent period owes to conflict, between a woman's maternally inherited (MI) and paternal...
متن کاملGenome downsizing, physiological novelty, and the global dominance of flowering plants
The abrupt origin and rapid diversification of the flowering plants during the Cretaceous has long been considered an "abominable mystery." While the cause of their high diversity has been attributed largely to coevolution with pollinators and herbivores, their ability to outcompete the previously dominant ferns and gymnosperms has been the subject of many hypotheses. Common among these is that...
متن کاملIntragroup and intragenomic conflict over chemical defense against predators
Insects are often chemically defended against predators. There is considerable evidence for a group-beneficial element to their defenses, and an associated potential for individuals to curtail their own investment in costly defense while benefitting from the investments of others, termed "automimicry." Although females in chemically defended taxa often lay their eggs in clusters, leading to sib...
